Smiling is a universal form of human communication, the easiest way to connect with another person. Everyone wants a pearly smile, but those with crooked or discoloured teeth may feel self-conscious about their grins.
There are several cosmetic dental solutions designed to improve the overall appearance of a person's teeth.
Luckily, there are several cosmetic dental solutions designed to improve the overall appearance of a person's teeth. Dental crowns and veneers are some of them. Find out more about these procedures when we answer the questions below.
What are dental crowns and veneers?
Dental crowns are small caps that are used to permanently cover a tooth above the gum line. As a result, the tooth is immediately whitened and straightened for a more pleasing appearance. Crowns are also used for a number of other purposes, such as protecting a weak tooth, restoring a broken tooth or supporting a tooth with a large filling.
Veneers apply the same principle, although rather than covering the entirety of the tooth, they simply hide the front. They are typically made from a thin wafer of porcelain or resin and are permanently bonded to the front of your teeth, masking up stains, chips and breaks.
What does the procedure involve?
Both these procedures take a relatively short amount of time so you'll be in and out of the dentist's surgery with a fresh new smile before you know it.
Dental crowns and veneers require two visits. For crowns, the first visit will involve filing down the original tooth to make room for the cap. In cases where the tooth is incredibly worn down, your dentist may need to fill the area up, in order to give the crown something to attach to. If you are getting veneers, the first visit will be about preparing the tooth and making an impression.
You will then be fitted with a temporary cap or veneer, which you'll wear as your permanent one is being made. These will be fitted in your second visit, and then you'll be good to go! The procedures are also relatively painless, as your dentist will give you something to keep you comfortable during the whole process.
